  • It's generally recommended if you have a BMI ≥ 40 kg/m², or a BMI between 35 and 40 with related conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Click here to find out your BMI.

  • The sleeve reduces the size of the stomach, while the bypass also reroutes the intestine, affecting absorption and hormones. The bypass typically results in more weight loss, but with a higher risk of nutritional deficiencies.

  • It is an effective and safe surgery, with complication rates similar to or lower than those of common procedures (such as gallbladder removal). Minor risks include hernias, infections, or bleeding.

  • You can expect to lose 60% to 70% of excess weight in 18-24 months, and keep most of it off long-term.

  • Hospitalization is usually 1 to 3 days. Return to work is between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on your job and type of surgery.

  • Start with liquids, then purees, and return to a solid diet in 4-6 weeks. For the rest of your life, you should consume small portions and avoid sugars/refined foods.

  • Yes, you will begin gentle walks from the hospital. Moderate exercise is recommended after 2-4 weeks, depending on your progress.

  • Laparoscopic surgery uses small incisions, less pain and faster recovery than open surgery, reducing the risk of infection and hospital stay.

  • If they are symptomatic or enlarging, early repair is recommended. Asymptomatic lesions can be monitored, but they don't resolve on their own.

  • Generally, at 18 years old, although in special cases, they may be assessed earlier. For older adults, the assessment is made on a case-by-case basis.
